I have
been thinking about this great hymn for several days. One of my early memories
of this hymn was hearing my pastor’s
wife Mary Carroll sing it as a call to
worship from the place where she always sat on the left side of the sanctuary
of our church in Merriam Kansas. She had
a beautiful voice that was easy to listen to in the context of Sunday morning
worship. However, the thing that I
remember the most was God’s presence that settled over the worshiping body of
believers that morning. There was simply
no doubt about it, God was pleased with her sincere musical offering that
Sunday morning. I have included the
words of Cecil F. Alexander’s hymn that she sang that morning:
1.
Jesus calls us o’er the tumult
Of our life’s wild, restless, sea;
Day by day His sweet voice soundeth,
Saying, “Christian, follow Me!”
Of our life’s wild, restless, sea;
Day by day His sweet voice soundeth,
Saying, “Christian, follow Me!”
2.
Jesus calls us from the worship
Of the vain world’s golden store,
From each idol that would keep us,
Saying, “Christian, love Me more!”
Of the vain world’s golden store,
From each idol that would keep us,
Saying, “Christian, love Me more!”
3.
In our joys and in our sorrows,
Days of toil and hours of ease,
Still He calls, in cares and pleasures,
“Christian, love Me more than these!”
Days of toil and hours of ease,
Still He calls, in cares and pleasures,
“Christian, love Me more than these!”
4.
Jesus calls us! By Thy mercies,
Savior, may we hear Thy call,
Give our hearts to Thine obedience,
Serve and love Thee best of all.
Savior, may we hear Thy call,
Give our hearts to Thine obedience,
Serve and love Thee best of all.
