PART I Church Music Philosophy
Berglund,
Robert. A Philosophy of Church Music. Chicago: Moody Press, 1985. This book covers church music philosophy and administration. Dr. Berglund's writings are deep and conservative. His years of musical experience and his sincere love for the Lord show up in his writings. It is a must read.
Fisher,
Tim. The Battle for Christian Music. Greenville, SC: Sacred Music
Services,
1992. This book is truly a philosophical treatise. He bases his entire music philosophy on the Bible. If you do not trust the Bible as inspired and authentic, you will not like this Book! For me it is a must read and a must re-read!
Garlock,
Frank and Woetzel, Kurt. Music in the Balance. Greenville ,
SC : Majesty
Music, Inc., 1992. In this very valuable work. Dr. Garlock teams up With Kurt Woetzel to effectively discuss church music in a way that is easy to understand. They effectively present their arguments and base them on Bible principles of musicing. It is a must read.
Schaeffer,
Francis. Art and The Bible. Inter-Varsity: Fellowship, England, 1969.
_______. Death
in the City. InterVarsity: Fellowship, England, 1969.
_______. Escape
From Reason. InterVarsity: Fellowship, England, 1968
_______. The
God Who Is There, InterVarsity Press: Sowner’s Grove, Illinois,1968.
_______. How
Should We Then Live? Fleming H.
Revell Company, 1976.
All of Schaeffer's books are valuable and very easy to read although his philosophical discussions are deep and meaningful. He had a philosophical understanding of a vast number of the world's well-known philosophers. His writings explain very clearly where these philosophers beliefs are faulty. I suggest that you start with Escape From Reason you can read it in one evening.
Taylor, Richard S. A Return to Christian Culture. Kansas City Missouri: Beacon Hill Press, 1972.
As far as I know this wonderful book is now out of print. If you can purchase it at a used book store, I recommend it highly. Dr. Taylor writes succinctly from a life saturated with spiritual wisdom. He writes plainly about the problems surrounding the use of music in worship. It is a must read.
Lucarni, Dan. Why I left the Cobntemporary Christian Music Movement. Darlington,England: Evangelical press, 2002. He calls his work "Confessions of A
Former Worship Leader." This work is an honest review of his life as a church worship leader. This book is a 104 page discussion of contemporary and rock music in the church. This book was an eye opener to me. It is a must read.
Osbeck, Kenneth. The Ministry of Music. Grand Rapids: Kregel Pubblications,1961. Although this is an older publication, it still has much relevance. Especially noteworthy to music philosophy discussion of The Historical Development of sacred Music and The Worship Service. I gained much from this book.
PART II Philosophy of Music Education
The books listed in this section were not written from a Christian perspective.
Elliott, Charles. Music Matters. New York: Oxford University Press, 1995. This university text challenges Aesthetic music education philosophy. He contends that music education should essentially be about active "musicing" and not about sitting quietly in a classroom listening to music. He also questions the AME philosophy of music education being about aesthetic experiences with music. If you want to know what the issues of music education are today, read this book.
Reimer, Bennett. A Philosophy of Music Education. Englewood Cliffs: Prentice Hall, Inc. 1970. This original book (it has been updated with two newer editions) has probably effected music education since the 1`970's than any other publication. Reimer represents the heart and soul of Aesthetic Music Education in the USA.
