“True Truth” Not Exhaustive
Truth Part 3
The way that a Christian musicer musics is
influenced by his or her knowledge and understanding of the nature and value of
music. Furthermore, the musicer’s perceived understanding of music is
influenced by that musician’s worldview of music, whether his or her worldview
is based on truth or error. If a
musician’s music worldview is inconsistent with the principles of the separated
changed life of a Christian then it is incongruent no matter how well the
musicer musics.
So,
since we are very aware as Christian musicians that “we know in part” as I
Corinthians 13:9 tells us, what do we do with what we know? The word know used in this verse is derived
from ginosko (1097) which means to be aware, understand, or to be sure. Again, let me say that although we do not
have exhaustive knowledge from the teachings of the Bible, we have congruent
knowledge. Therefore, the Christian can “know”
from the truth basis found in the Bible.
The Christian can utilize the principles of musicing that are taught in
Scripture to build a Christocentric music philosophy. Having partial knowledge does not keep a
Christian musician from using the “true truth” that he or she does know and
understand. Since the Bible does not answer every question concerning church
music and music education, a long broad study of music is absolutely necessary
if a Christian is to understand the nature and value of music at its deepest
levels.
