Francis Schaeffer often spoke and wrote of
what he called “true truth”. He was
famous among Christian conservatives for his belief that we could have
knowledge of this truth. 1Cointhians 13:12 gives us some clarification of how
we now “know” when it states, “For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then
face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am
known.” The word epiginosko (1921) which
was translated “shall I know” means according to Robertson “I shall fully
(epi-) know.” Word Pictures in the
New Testament, Vol. 4, by A.T.
Robertson, p.180 The import of this
verse is that, although at this time our knowledge is not exhaustive and is
therefore incomplete, when we see God face to face in Heaven our knowledge will
be exhaustive.
Although the Bible does not give us exhaustive
truth about music, it does give us “true truth” about music. What the Bible does say about music is
accurate and true because it “… is given by inspiration of God, and is
profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in
righteousness.” (II Timothy 3:16) Because it is “God
breathed” it is completely true. Perhaps in past generations it may not
have been necessary to remind church musicians and music educators that the references
to music in the Bible are completely true, relevant and profitable to all
musicians, but it certainly is in this post-postmodern world.
