2Ch
20:14-15 records that, “Then upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of
Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph,
came the Spirit of the LORD in the midst of the congregation; And he said,
Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king
Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the LORD unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason
of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God's.” Jahazial was the son of Mattaniah and the
grandson of the Levite chief musician Asaph.
This long tradition of Levite musicians is recorded in 1Ch 25:16 “The
ninth to Mattaniah, he, his sons, and his brethren, were twelve…”
Without
doubt Jahazial sang this message to the congregation under the inspiration of
the Holy Spirit. The Hebrew word amar (559) which was translated said in
the AV, according to Strong’s Concordance
was used in the OT with great latitude.
Its usage includes certify, charge, to make plain, and to utter. Since The Holy Spirit chose a Levite musician
to deliver His message, we can justly conclude that Jahazial sang this prophetic
message to the congregation.
You
are probably wondering why I made all this fuss over this musician and the
Hebrew word amar. There is a long history of the Holy
Spirit coming upon musicians who loved and served God. The OT accounts of the Holy Spirit anointing
devout God fearing musicians were centuries before the Holy Spirit’s promise
was given in Ac 2:17-18 “And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God,
I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters
shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall
dream dreams: And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those
days of my Spirit…” I contend that God
is still pouring out His Spirit upon Christian musicians who love and serve him
in the twenty first century.
