Acknowledging that God Owns What He Created
Colossians 1:16a states, “For by him were all things created,
that are in the heavens, and that are in the earth…”
Most Christian
musicians do not have any trouble believing that god created. As a matter of fact, many of them believe
that he created things that are in the heavens and things that are on or in the
earth. However, some musicians get
nervous when one considers that God created music. You see, he did create music because music is
part of “all” of his creation. It is not
that these musicians doubt his creation, but they sort of believe that God created
music and that man made music.
If one has the notion that man made or created music, or
that he created anything for that matter, this musician has a faulty view of
creation and music’s beginning. If man
created music then he owns it because man took nothing and made something—music. However, only God is capable of taking
nothing and making something out of what did not exist.
So, the purpose
of this little discussion today is to give Christians a clear philosophical
view of the fine art that they use to worship God. Every Christian musician must realize that he
or she merely takes God’s musical building blocks, i.e. the elements of music,
and arranges them in an order which we call musical compositions. Therefore, we, as Christian musicians, are
only the “handmaidens” of God’s great creation we call music. Furthermore, our heavenly Father has entrusted
us to be stewards, not owners, of his creation we call music.
