Ways of Thinking-part 1
Writers often
refer to the terms modern, postmodern, and post-Christian and contemporary
thinkers. The term modern means that
which exhibits the characteristics of present or recent times. One who adheres to conforms to current
tendencies at the exclusion of traditional ways of ministering through the art
of music or builds a music philosophy based on modern standards of
“correctness” and “knowing” is a “modern” music minister. A distinction must be made between “modern”
and “up-to-date”. Modern connotes a new
way of “thinking” or “knowing” about musicing.
Up to date connotes thinking new things about musicing. Conservative traditional thesis thinkers*
must not make the mistake of confusing the two.
If this mistake is made the conservative Christian will become an
“antiquer” – one who reveres only old things.
*“Thesis
thinking” means that one’s thinking process is based on a thesis (a statement
or theory that is put forward as a premise to be maintained or proved). and
recognizes that there is also an antithesis (a directly opposite belief or
viewpoint).
I appreciate your attention to the subject of Christian “musicing”, and I believe you want all such music to be “appropriate”. I sense though that you’re focusing on the wrong thing. I believe that any music that glorifies God also pleases Him, whether it’s country, rap or metal. You see, God knows what is in the heart of every musician, and it is not our place to judge whether one’s heart is properly aligned with God, an accessmeant only He can make.
