Does
Music Communicate in an Effective Way?
We know with certainty that the music part of music is capable of
communicating because Psalm 49:4 states emphatically, “I will incline mine ear
to a parable: I will open my dark saying upon the harp.” In the context of this
Bible teaching there is no mention of words alone although exegetes assume that
the word chiydah (2420) which
connotes puzzles indicates that text was included. Certainly if text was involved the music part
of the harp music made communication and understanding of these dark sayings
possible.
Earlier I mentioned that when a Christian musician wrongly assumes that
the music part of music is unable to communicate, he or she will also wrongly
assume that the music part of music does not matter because it is benign and is incapable of resulting in any
moral implications. This erroneous
assumption seems to be most often purported by Christian musicians. Perhaps they make this assumption in a feeble
attempt to make the end justify the means in their philosophy and praxis.
