Putting Your Church’s Music Philosophy in Writing—part
6
Today we are featuring part of Park Cities Presbyterian
Church’s music philosophy. It is
presented as having a three-fold purpose.
Notable is the connection of music in worship as prayer and its
universal appeal..
“The Christian faith is a singing faith.
Scripture repeatedly exhorts God’s people to “Sing to the Lord.” Song may fill
the heart of an individual child of God, or may unite whole congregations in
praise. Music has a three-fold purpose at PCPC. First, it is an essential part
of corporate worship. Singing in worship is closely related to prayer as we see
demonstrated in the Psalms. In worship we have spoken prayers and sung prayers.
We also
utilize a variety of instruments for praise taking as our pattern scripture
passages such as Psalm 150. Second, singing plays a key role in Christian
discipleship. Singing the truths of Scripture plants those truths deeply in our
hearts, even as Paul teaches in Colossians 3.16… Third, music and song are
useful for ministry… to young and old… alike. Song adapts to any context: it
celebrates a wedding, comforts at a funeral, ministers to the shut in,
proclaims the gospel to the world.” https://pcpc.org/music/philosophy-of-music/
